How to specify a label size

Labels sizes are specified in the Page Layout property pages accessible through the File menu.

There are three property pages:

Form selection page - which allows an already defined label to be selected from a drop-down list;

Form layout page - which allows labels to be defined in terms of the number of labels per printer page and associated margins;

Form size page - which allows labels to be defined in terms of the height and width of each label and the repeat height and repeat width (i.e. the distance between the start of one label and the start of the next).

Labels are referred to by name. By default a number of standard page, label and envelope sizes appear in the Form selection page list, plus a number of spares (initially called Custom …).

If the label size you require is not already in the list, pick one of the Custom labels from the Form selection page list and then click on either the Form size or Form layout tabs to change to on of the defining pages.

Using the Form layout page the labels may be defined by entering the number of labels per page down the page and across the page in the boxes provided. Also the gap (in millimetres) between adjacent labels and the margins (also in millimetres) at the left and right hand sides of the page and at the top and bottom of the page may be specified. If the labels are centred on the page the “Centred on page” checkbox may be checked - in which case only the top and left-hand margins need to be provided.

Once the required values have been specified the label may be given a suitable name so that it can be selected from the drop-down list on the Form selection page when it is required in future. Just overwrite the text in the Form box with a name that seems appropriate for your needs.

Alternatively the Form size page may be used to edit one of the Custom labels and specify (in millimetres) the precise sizes and repeat distances of the label on a printer page. Note that the size of the labels is used only for drawing the screen background. It is the repeat distance which needs to be exactly right if successive labels are to be printed in precisely the right place on the printer page.

Again when the required values have been entered the label specification should be named (by editing the text in the Form box) to simplify selection of that label in the future.

Label sizes are actually stored in a file called DLABEL2K.INI, which is created the first time you define a label layout. If this files is deleted the available label sizes are reset to their default values.
