Printing labels and details

If all the items you sell have barcodes on them you may never need to print barcode labels. But if they don’t…

On the Items form – opened from the control panel – there are two buttons marked Print; one for printing labels and one for printing records. Pushing the Print Labels button starts up a special version of a label printing program named AnyLabels. dPos is provided with a default label printing template, and this will open in AnyLabels and will be connected to your database’s Items table.

The Edit menu allows you to change the label design and label size to suit you requirements, and then Print item on the File menu allows you to print labels. More detailed instructions and a tutorial on designing labels are provided in the AnyLabels Help system or manual.

The ItemLabel template supplied with dPos is set to print item prices with tax included. The appendix “AnyLabels templates” shows how prices without tax, and/or tax cost may be used one a label.

While you can create and save as many label designs as you wish, using as many label template names as you wish, it is important to realise that the template named ItemLabel.dlb is the one that will always be loaded when you push the Print Labels button from dPos’s Items form. You can modify and save this template as much as you wish, but if you delete the template the Print Labels button will not work correctly.

The ItemLabels template allows you to print barcode labels using the barcode data provided in the database. The sample data provided includes fake retail (ie. 13 digit – EAN 13) barcodes; if you are selling items that do not have official EAN 13 barcode numbers then you can invent your own numbers, but should change the barcode type to Code 128 – otherwise your barcodes may fail to scan.

To make your own templates that are loaded by AnyLabels without using dPos see the “AnyLabels templates” appendix.

When you have finished printing labels, just close the AnyLabels program to return to dPos.

In much the same way pushing the Print Details button on the Items form causes AnyLabels to load the ItemDetails template, which is useful for printing out paper records of the items you sell.

Essentially the details template produces label images printed on your printer’s page – so that you get many items per page, as you can see by selecting AnyLabels Page View from the View menu.

Again you can customise this template as much as you wish, but again there must always be an ItemDetails.dlb template in existence for the Print Details button to work correctly.

You can save either of the item templates with different names and then open them in AnyLabels (even without dPos loaded), or you can use AnyLabels as a stand-alone program – ie. not connected to your pos database at all. However, if you are using AnyLabels unconnected to your pos database, it is recommended that you save any templates you create in you desktop’s Labels folder and NOT in the dPos folder, as this could give rise to problems during backup and restore operations.
